The Uncommon Math Heroes Community of Practice is a free learning experience for Wyoming out-of-school-time programs, designed to build on what they already do well. It's grounded in Wyoming stories, backed by research, and built to provide language and tools to use in any program.
No math expertise is needed. We'll start with our own math stories, then explore simple ways to notice the math young people are already doing, to treat struggle as a sign someone needs support rather than a sign they can't, and to show that asking for help is a strength. It's grounded in real stories from Wyoming people, from a tennis pro to a rancher to an engine builder and backed by research. Register by Monday, October 12!
Bring your team and learn together!
Schedule: Join us for four virtual sessions on Zoom. Between sessions, participants will put their new skills into practice!
- October 15 @ 2:00pm: Session 1: What’s Your Math Story? Examine our own relationship with math.
- October 29 @ 2:00pm: Session 2: The Math Is Already There: Building the noticing and naming muscle.
- November 12 @ 2:00pm: Session 3: When They Hit the Wall: The challenge response and help-seeking as a teaching move.
- November 19 @ 2:00pm: Session 4: Build the Bridge: Put it all together with practical strategies for supporting every learner.
Requirements: Bring your curiosity, a willingness to examine your own story, and a commitment to showing up for the young people in your program.
